Day 1 - St Bees Head to Cleator - Saturday 5th April 2025

This blogspot has been moved to my own personal domain.

I have been finding this app quite tedious to use and so decided to give up on it

and move everything to a new place.

Today I started in St Bees and got as far as Cleator. I had planned on going a little bit further, but my body was protesting against the heat in combination with carrying a heavy pack, so I decided to be sensible and stop for the day.

I also was extremely kind to myself and checked into a hotel for the night, where I had a meal, which wasn't great but enough to hit the spot, and currently on my second pint. It will be my last, I am going for a soak in the bath and having an early night.

I've seen some fantastic scenery today. St Bees and the coastline northwards is simply stunning.

This is the sign near the beach which signifies the start of walk. I picked up a pebble as is traditional, and headed off, steepish climb in parts heading to up St Bees Head. Glorious blue skies and wall to wall sunshine made for a very enjoyable stroll along the coast.

The lighthouse was quite impressive.

Lots of people around here today, enjoying the sunshine.

I passed a working quarry.

The path turned away from the coast here and went inland. I passed a farm with some cows and calves inside a cattle shed.

and then passed through a field with some very inquisitive sheep. I was quite surprised at how close they came up to me, and one of them seemed to want to follow me for a while, very cute. It was about here that I saw a large smoke plume not too far away. I later discovered there have been fires along the coast leading up to St Bees which resulted in the line being closed.

I passed through Sandwith and Moor Row and had decided by then I was going to finish the day at Cleator, a bit short of where I had wanted to be, but it had been a hot day and I was feeling weary.

This was very welcome!

Time for sleep!
